Bird netting installation before and after — balcony aperture, Thurrock — open balcony with nesting debris converted to fully netted exclusion barrier
Before: open balcony with accumulated bird nesting debris. After: mechanically fixed netting installed across the full aperture providing a permanent exclusion barrier.

The Brief

The customer needed a permanent, discreet solution to stop birds gaining access to their upper-floor balcony. Birds had been roosting and nesting on the balcony, leaving fouling and nesting debris that required regular clearing. A physical exclusion barrier was required that would work long term without the need for ongoing intervention.

Initial Condition

The balcony was an open aperture offering unrestricted access to birds. Nesting material — dry grass and debris — had accumulated across the balcony floor, indicating established roosting and nesting activity. No previous exclusion measures were in place. The external masonry substrate around the perimeter was suitable for mechanical fixing.

Issues Identified

  • Unrestricted bird access through the full balcony aperture allowing roosting and nesting
  • Accumulated nesting debris — dry grass and organic material — covering the balcony floor
  • Ongoing fouling creating hygiene and maintenance issues for the property owner
  • No existing exclusion system in place — a permanent physical barrier was required
  • Corner junctions and upper edges required particular attention to eliminate potential ingress gaps

Our Approach

We installed a mechanically fixed perimeter bird netting system across the full balcony aperture. Exterior wall hooks were drilled and secured into the masonry at measured intervals around the complete perimeter, establishing a continuous fixing line from which the netting was tensioned and secured using cable ties. The system provides a durable, continuous exclusion barrier without the need for chemical deterrents or ongoing maintenance.

Work Completed

Exterior wall hooks were installed at measured intervals around the full perimeter of the balcony opening using a hammer drill and impact driver. Bird-control netting was positioned across the complete aperture and progressively tensioned to ensure even load distribution across all fixing points. Cable ties were applied sequentially to secure the netting at each hook, with particular attention given to corners, edges and upper junctions to eliminate potential ingress gaps. All cable tie excess was trimmed on completion and the installation was inspected to confirm full perimeter coverage and fixing integrity.

How We Did It

  1. 1Site assessment of the balcony aperture and perimeter substrate to confirm suitability for mechanical fixing
  2. 2Measured layout of fixing point positions around the full balcony perimeter to ensure consistent tension distribution
  3. 3Drill and installation of exterior wall hooks into the masonry substrate at all fixing points using hammer drill and impact driver
  4. 4Positioning and initial tensioning of bird-control netting across the full aperture
  5. 5Progressive application and tightening of cable ties at each hook point, working systematically around the perimeter
  6. 6Additional attention to corners, upper junctions and edges to eliminate potential ingress gaps
  7. 7Trimming of all cable tie tails using snippers following final tension adjustment
  8. 8Full perimeter inspection to confirm coverage, fixing integrity and absence of gaps prior to completion

Materials Used

Bird-control netting (full balcony aperture coverage); exterior wall hooks (mechanically fixed into masonry perimeter); cable ties (for netting retention and tensioning). Tools: hammer drill, impact driver, snippers.

Outcome

A continuous, secure bird exclusion barrier was installed across the full balcony aperture. The netting covers the complete opening with no gaps at corners, edges or upper junctions. The mechanically fixed perimeter system provides a long-term solution that does not rely on deterrents or ongoing maintenance. The balcony is now inaccessible to birds and the customer can use the space without ongoing fouling or nesting debris.
