What After Builders Cleaning Removes
If you've just finished a renovation, you'll recognise most of these. This is the mess a post-construction clean is designed for — not an ordinary domestic tidy.
Why Construction Dust Is Different
Construction dust isn't the same as ordinary household dust. Fine plaster dust, drywall particles and sanding residue are much finer than domestic dust — and they behave differently. Disturbing them with an ordinary vacuum or cloth doesn't remove them; it redistributes them.

Interim clean

Construction residues are treated according to floor type and finish. We don't apply aggressive cleaning chemistry to new sensitive surfaces.

Newly installed surfaces may be vulnerable. We adjust the cleaning approach for:

Important: Cleaning vs Builders' Waste Clearance
A post-construction clean removes cleaning-scale waste — dust, packaging, films, small debris. It does not include removal of substantial builders' waste such as rubble, plasterboard, timber offcuts, floor packaging, or general construction skip material.
Ideally, heavy building debris should be cleared before the cleaners arrive — it allows every floor and surface to be reached properly. If waste clearance is needed, this can be arranged as a separate service through Multrex or by your builder before our visit. Please flag this at quote stage so we can scope the job accurately.
When to Book an After Builders Clean
Timing matters. Booking too early — before all dust-producing trades have finished — can mean a clean that gets partially undone by subsequent work. Booking too late creates pressure on a handover or move-in date. Here's the practical guide:
Ideal: all dust-producing trades finished
Plastering, sanding, major cutting, and decorating should be complete before the final clean. If these continue afterwards, dust will reappear. For smaller projects, this often means booking the clean when the main works are done and only minor snagging remains.
Allow time before occupation or handover
Don't schedule the clean for the morning of handover or move-in. If anything needs attention — a surface we need to revisit, or a remaining snag — you'll have no time to address it. Build in at least a day's buffer where possible.
For larger projects — consider phased cleaning
If trades will continue working after an initial clean (returning for second-fix, snagging, carpet laying), a staged approach often makes more sense than one final visit under time pressure.
If trades return after the clean
Any trades working on-site after the post-construction clean can re-introduce dust and contamination. A follow-up sparkle clean addresses this — this is the most common reason two cleaning stages are booked on larger projects.
Book as soon as you have a projected trade-completion date
Don't leave the cleaning quote until the day before. We aim to respond quickly to enquiries, but giving us lead time means we can plan around your programme more reliably.
Are the Builders Finished?
A quick checklist before booking. If trades are still ongoing in several of these areas, a phased clean may be more practical than waiting for completion:
How to Prepare for the Clean
Preparation makes a material difference to the quality and completeness of the clean. The more access and information we have, the better the result.
Remove or arrange removal of heavy building debris
Rubble, plasterboard, packaging and skip material should be cleared before we arrive. It allows every floor and surface to be reached properly — including corners, skirting boards and behind fixed items.
Ensure dust-producing trades have finished
Where possible, ensure plastering, sanding, major cutting and decorating are done before the clean. Subsequent dusty work will partly undo a clean — if trades are returning, discuss a phased approach.
Provide water and electricity
The clean requires access to running water and electricity throughout. Ensure these aren't cut off before the job is complete.
Confirm access and logistics
Clear access to all areas — including storage cupboards, loft hatches if included, utility areas and outbuildings in scope. Confirm parking and any site security arrangements.
Identify delicate or specialist finishes
Flag newly sealed surfaces, specialist stone, fresh paint, or any surface type that needs specific care. The more we know in advance, the better we can plan the approach.
Leave protective films on until cleaning day
Keep manufacturer films on new windows, appliances and worktops until all other trades have finished. Remove them as part of — or just before — the clean, not earlier.
Identify any areas excluded from the clean
If certain rooms or areas are out of scope (occupied rooms, areas with ongoing works), confirm this at quote stage so the clean is scoped accurately and no time is wasted on-site.

We review the information and quote based on the actual scope — size, contamination level, floor types, cleaning stage (builders clean, sparkle clean, or both) and access. No guesswork.
Any areas, finishes or constraints requiring specific attention are confirmed in writing before the clean begins. For larger projects, we confirm the programme and phasing.
On the day, we work room by room in a fixed top-to-bottom sequence. Dust and surface residue is removed before floors — never the other way around.
Each floor type is cleaned according to its finish — timber, stone, vinyl, tile and carpet all treated appropriately. Aggressive chemistry is never applied to new sensitive surfaces without confirmed compatibility.
Windows and glass, skirting boards, door frames and fittings are detailed after the main dust work. Protective films and labels are removed as the last surface pass.
Where we spot snagging issues — paint defects, loose fittings, incomplete sealing — we flag them. Multrex maintenance can address these where within our scope if required alongside the clean.

Keep protective films on until cleaning day
Leave manufacturer films on new windows, appliances and worktops until all trades have finished. They are the best defence against marks during snagging. Remove them as part of the final clean — not before.
Builders' dust keeps resettling
Fine construction dust hangs in the air and can resettle on surfaces for days, particularly after activity in the property. If trades return after the clean, expect some re-deposition — a follow-up sparkle clean addresses this.
Send photos — it makes quotation more accurate
A few photos of the current site condition — especially the kitchen, bathroom tiles, any heavily contaminated surfaces and floor types — allow us to quote more accurately and reduce on-day surprises.
Ventilate the property while plaster dries
Fresh plaster and screed release significant moisture. Keep rooms ventilated in the first weeks to prevent condensation and mould establishing on new walls and surfaces.

If any area included in your clean does not meet the agreed standard, notify us within 24 hours of completion and we will return to re-clean the specific area at no additional charge.
