Fence Installation & Repair
A sound fence keeps your garden private, secure and tidy — but panels and posts don't last forever. We replace individual panels, repair or renew rotten and leaning posts, and install complete new runs of fencing across Thurrock, Havering, Essex, East London and Kent. Whether it's one broken panel spoiling the look of the garden or a full boundary that's reached the end of its life, we'll get it straight and solid again.
We're also on hand after bad weather. Storm damage is one of the most common reasons we're called out — blown panels, broken arris rails and snapped posts can all undermine a fence overnight, leaving gardens open and security compromised. We respond promptly to storm repair enquiries and can often fit repairs into the schedule within a few days of the damage occurring.

Types of Fencing We Install and Repair
Panel Fencing
Lap panel and featherboard panel fencing is by far the most common type in residential gardens across Essex, London and Kent. Panels typically come in 1.8m or 1.5m heights and are slotted between posts at 1.83m centres. They're affordable, widely available and quick to install. The downside is that lap panels are relatively lightweight — in exposed gardens or those prone to catching wind, they can fail in strong gusts. We fit them securely to either timber or concrete posts depending on the customer's preference and the site conditions.
Close-Board Fencing
Close-board fencing (also called featherboard or palisade fencing) is built on-site using arris rails fixed between posts, with vertical featherboard planks overlapped and nailed along them. It is significantly stronger and longer-lasting than panel fencing, handles exposed sites better, and can follow sloping ground by raking the boards to match the gradient. Close-board is the preferred choice for boundaries that need to last, and is common around commercial and industrial sites. Repairs often involve replacing individual arris rails or boards without disturbing the posts.
Picket Fencing
Picket fencing provides a front-garden boundary that gives a property charm while keeping it open and welcoming. We install picket fencing using either timber or composite materials, with pointed or flat-topped pales fixed to horizontal rails between posts. It's a lower fence (typically 900mm to 1.2m) not intended for privacy, and suits period and cottage-style properties well.
Trellis
Trellis panels fitted above a fence line add height for privacy without the visual weight of a solid panel extension. We fix trellis to the tops of existing posts where they have enough height in hand, or add a trellis topper using appropriate fixings. Trellis is also used as a standalone feature to divide garden areas or provide a structure for climbing plants.
Gravel Boards
A gravel board fitted along the base of a fence keeps the panels lifted clear of soil and standing water — the most common cause of rot in timber fencing. We fit concrete or timber gravel boards as part of new fence installations and as retrofits to existing fences. This simple addition can significantly extend the life of the panels above.
Gate Hanging
We hang timber and metal gates as part of fencing work or as standalone jobs. This includes fitting gate posts correctly — slightly closer than the gate width to allow for hinges and a closing gap — digging and concreting posts in, and hanging and adjusting the gate so it swings freely and closes squarely. A well-hung gate should operate with one finger and latch cleanly; a poor installation rattles, drops and is a constant nuisance.
Repair vs Replacement — Honest Assessment
When a fence is damaged or deteriorating, the practical question is whether repair or replacement gives better value. We always assess honestly rather than defaulting to the larger job. A single storm-blown panel can be replaced while leaving the rest of the fence and posts untouched, providing the posts are sound. A fence that is repeatedly losing panels, has multiple posts leaning or rocking, or has widespread rot throughout the timber is usually more economical to replace in full than to keep patching.
Post condition is the critical factor. Timber posts rot at ground level, often appearing sound above the surface while soft and failing below it. A post that can be rocked at the base — even slightly — will not hold a fence securely in wind. Where posts are failing but still standing, we can often fit concrete spurs (a repair spur concreted in alongside the existing post and bolted to it) to restore rigidity without digging out and resetting. Where posts have failed completely, we dig them out and set new ones in postcrete or concrete.
For party fence situations between neighbouring properties, we note that questions of ownership, cost-sharing and responsibility are legal matters. We are happy to carry out whichever works are agreed between neighbours, but we cannot advise on the legal position. If there is any dispute, it is worth checking with a solicitor or the Land Registry before commissioning work.
Timber Treatment, Painting & Commercial Fencing
New timber fencing is often supplied pressure-treated, which provides baseline protection against rot. Applying a timber preservative or fence paint after installation — and repeating it every year or two — extends the life of the fence considerably and helps it stay looking smart. We can apply timber treatment or fence paint as part of a new installation or as a standalone job on existing fencing. Dark shades like charcoal and slate grey are currently popular and can transform the look of a garden at relatively low cost.
For commercial and industrial clients, we install close-board fencing, palisade fencing and site hoarding for construction projects, letting sites and commercial boundaries. Posts fail before panels
Most fences come down because the post has rotted at ground level, not because the panel is worn. Concrete posts or repair spurs give a much longer-lasting boundary than timber posts alone.
Check your fence before winter storms
A wobbly panel or a post you can rock by hand will be the first to go in high winds. Fixing it in calm weather is far easier than a scramble after a storm.
Keep panels clear of the ground
Panels sitting directly on soil soak up moisture and rot from the bottom. A gravel board along the base lifts the timber clear and greatly extends its life.
