What Affects the Cost of Splashback Installation

Labour from £150. There is no single fixed price — the scope depends on several factors we ask about in the quote.

Material type

Tiled work requires cutting, layout and grouting. Panel installation differs by adhesive system and product. Different skills and time — different labour cost.

Dimensions

A small hob-only panel is a different job from a full worktop-to-wall-unit run or a feature wall. Area and linear length both matter.

Socket and switch cut-outs

Each cut-out requires accurate measurement and precise cutting. One socket is quick. Three sockets plus a cooker switch takes longer and adds skill.

Existing covering

Removing old tiles, a glass panel or stainless steel is additional work — and removing tiles especially can reveal wall damage underneath.

Wall condition

A flat painted wall is straightforward. Damaged plaster, old adhesive or uneven substrate from removed tiles may need filling and priming before installation.

Customer-supplied vs Multrex-supplied

We fit customer-supplied materials. Where Multrex supplies, materials are quoted separately from labour. Send product links or measurements for an accurate figure.

Small job does not mean simple job. Even a modest splashback involves measuring accurately, marking out, cutting, wall preparation, adhesive or fixing, curing or grouting, sealing and clean-up. The quote reflects the skilled labour, not just the material area.

Before Installation

Preparing the Wall for a Splashback

The finished result depends heavily on the wall underneath. A splashback installed onto a sound, flat surface looks clean and stays put. One installed over damaged plaster or old adhesive residue can sit proud, crack sealant lines, or lift at the edges.

Flat painted wall
Straightforward — clean, prime if required, install.
Existing tiles to remove
Tiles removed carefully. Wall behind often has old adhesive and minor damage — we assess and quote for making good.
Old panel or glass to remove
Panel removed. Adhesive residue scraped back. Surface assessed for levelness before the new splashback goes on.
Damaged or uneven plaster
Significant repair is separately scoped. Minor filling is included where quoted.
Bare new plaster
Must be fully dry before installation. We will advise if a site visit finds the plaster is still green.

Installation Differs by Splashback Material

Each product type has specific requirements for preparation, fixing, cut-outs and finishing.

Tiled Splashbacks

Ceramic, porcelain, natural stone

  • ✓Layout planned to avoid small cut-off tiles at visible edges
  • ✓Tiles cut and fitted with consistent spacers and grout joints
  • ✓Socket and switch cut-outs made with appropriate tools
  • ✓Grouted with your chosen grout colour, then cleaned off
  • ✓Silicone seal applied at worktop and internal corner junctions
  • ✓Natural stone may require sealing — product-specific advice at quote

Glass Splashbacks

Pre-manufactured toughened glass panels

  • ✓Glass panels must be manufactured to the correct dimensions before fitting
  • ✓Cut-outs for sockets must be specified before manufacture — not improvised on site
  • ✓Dimensions measured precisely from the prepared wall
  • ✓Panel fixed using appropriate adhesive and/or mechanical fixing system
  • ✓Edges sealed neatly to worktop and wall

Important: We do not cut toughened glass on site. If your panel has been manufactured without cut-outs, it will need to go back to the supplier. Always confirm socket positions before ordering.

Stainless Steel Splashbacks

Brushed or mirror-finish panels

  • ✓Wall surface cleaned and prepared for adhesion

Behind a hob: Not all acrylic products are rated for every hob type. Gas hobs in particular generate significant heat. Always check your product's heat tolerance before installation behind a gas or solid-plate hob.

⚠ Hob & Material Suitability

Not every splashback material is suitable behind every hob type. Gas hobs, induction and solid-plate hobs all have different heat characteristics. Material suitability must be checked against your specific product and manufacturer guidance before installation — we advise on this at quote stage.

⚡ Electrical Boundary

We cut splashbacks neatly around existing socket and switch faceplates. This is not electrical work. If sockets need repositioning, adding, or if wiring needs altering, that requires a qualified electrician — we can route this to the appropriate service.

🔧 Plumbing Boundary

Fitting a splashback around a sink, tap or pipework does not include plumbing alteration. If the installation exposes a plumbing issue, or if taps or pipes need repositioning, that is a separate scope — see our Taps & Sinks service.

Replacing an Existing Splashback

If there is already a splashback in place, removal is included where agreed in the quote. Removal sometimes reveals more than expected — old adhesive residue, minor plaster damage, or holes from the original fixing. Where this happens, we assess on site and advise before the new installation proceeds.

→Decorate the adjacent wall if paint has been disturbed

Can you cut around sockets and switches?▾
Yes. We measure and cut around existing socket and switch faceplates so the splashback sits flush and finishes neatly around each outlet. This is cutting the panel or tiles around existing accessories — any repositioning or rewiring of sockets requires a qualified electrician, which is a separate service.
Can you move or reposition sockets as part of the job?▾
No. Repositioning or adding electrical sockets is electrical work requiring a qualified electrician. We can route this to the appropriate service alongside the splashback installation.
Can you fit over existing tiles?▾
It depends on the existing tile condition, their stability, the product being installed, the fixing/adhesive requirements, finished thickness and socket depth. We assess suitability at quote stage — we don't give a blanket yes or no without seeing the specific situation.
Can you remove the existing splashback first?▾
Yes. Removal of tiles, glass, stainless or acrylic panels can be included as part of the agreed scope. Note that removal can reveal wall damage, old adhesive or plaster issues — we assess after removal and advise before proceeding with the new installation.
Does the wall need to be perfectly flat?▾
It needs to be sufficiently flat for the installation method. Minor imperfections are filled as part of preparation. Significantly uneven surfaces, damaged plaster or substantial old adhesive may require additional work which we scope separately.
Can you repair the wall first?▾
Minor filling and preparation is included where quoted as part of the installation. Significant plaster repair or replastering is a separate scope and quoted accordingly.
Do you supply adhesive and sealant?▾
Yes. Installation adhesive and edge sealant are included in the labour price. Tiles, panels and surface materials are quoted separately where Multrex supplies them.
Do I need to buy the splashback before getting a quote?▾
No. You can get a quote based on the space, material type and approximate dimensions. We can advise on product suitability at quote stage. For glass panels, accurate dimensions are needed before the glass is ordered — we can advise on the measurement process.
Can you measure for a bespoke glass panel?▾
We can measure the space and provide dimensions for you or your glass supplier to order from. Toughened glass panels must have cut-outs specified before manufacture — they cannot be drilled or cut on site.
How long does installation take?▾
A small panel behind a hob with one socket cut-out may take half a day. A full tiled splashback run with removal, preparation and grouting may take a full day or more. We confirm estimated time in the quote.
Can I fit a full wall splashback?▾
Yes. We install splashbacks across a full kitchen run, a feature wall, or a larger tiled area. Dimensions and area affect the labour cost — provide approximate measurements at the quote stage.
What photos are useful for a quote?▾
Most useful: the full kitchen wall from a distance, a close-up of the existing splashback or bare wall, socket and switch locations, and the hob if the splashback is behind it. If you've chosen a product, share the product link or a photo.
Can Multrex complete other kitchen jobs at the same time?▾
Yes. Wall repairs, painting, shelving, tap replacement and wider tiling can often be quoted alongside the splashback and completed in the same visit. Add details in the quote form.
Do I need an electrician before you can fit the splashback?▾
Not usually. We cut around existing sockets — no electrician needed for a standard installation. If sockets need repositioning or adding, an electrician is required first, and we can route that if needed.
