End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist

Cleaning is consistently cited as one of the most common causes of deposit disputes at the end of a tenancy. Most inventories are compared against the condition recorded when you moved in, so the goal is to return the property to that standard — fair wear and tear aside. Work through each room methodically, top to bottom, and tick items off as you go.

Kitchen

The kitchen is where inspections are usually toughest, because grease and limescale build up in ways that are easy to overlook. Set aside plenty of time here.

• Degrease and wipe down all worktops, splashbacks and tiled areas.
• Clean cupboards inside and out, including handles and the tops of units.
• Descale the sink and taps and clear the plughole.
• Clean the extractor hood and replace or wash the filter if you can.
• Defrost, empty and wipe out the fridge, freezer and any dishwasher.
• Clean the hob, grill and inside the oven — often the single hardest task.

Bathroom

Limescale, mould and soap residue are the giveaways in a bathroom, so focus on a sparkling, streak-free finish.

• Descale taps, showerheads, tiles and glass screens.
• Remove mould from grout and sealant where possible.
• Clean and disinfect the toilet, including behind and around the base.
• Polish mirrors and chrome fittings until streak-free.
• Wipe down extractor fans, skirting and the inside of any cabinets.

Bedrooms and Living Areas

These rooms are usually quicker, but dust gathers in the places people forget. Move furniture where it is safe to do so.

• Dust light fittings, shelves, picture rails and the tops of doors and wardrobes.
• Wipe skirting boards, radiators, switches and sockets.
• Clean inside wardrobes, drawers and any fitted storage.
• Spot-clean marks on walls and paintwork where possible.
• Vacuum carpets thoroughly, including under and behind furniture.

Windows, Doors and Woodwork

• Clean windows inside, including sills, frames and tracks.
• Wipe internal doors, frames and handles.
• Remove cobwebs from corners and around light fittings.
• Dust and wipe blinds, or launder curtains where the tenancy requires it.

Appliances

Any appliances left in the property should be clean and working. Empty and wipe the washing machine drawer and door seal, clear the tumble dryer lint filter, and wipe microwaves inside and out. If white goods belong to the landlord, cleaning them to a good standard is expected.

Garden and Outside Areas

If your tenancy includes a garden, patio or outside space, it should be handed back tidy: lawns cut, borders reasonably clear, bins emptied and any rubbish removed. Sweep paths and patios and store or remove anything you brought in.

DIY or Book Professionals?

A confident tenant with time on their hands can complete most of this list. It makes sense to DIY when the property is small, was well kept throughout the tenancy, and you have a couple of clear days before handover.
