Why Seal After Pressure Washing?
Pressure washing cleans the surface — sealing protects it. Without a sealer, a freshly cleaned block paving driveway or patio will begin to grow algae again within a single season, weeds will re-establish in the joints within a year, and oil staining from vehicles will penetrate deeply into the porous surface. The work needs doing again in twelve to eighteen months.
A good quality sealer applied to a clean, dry surface penetrates into or coats the surface and acts as a barrier. Algae and moss find it significantly harder to colonise. Weeds in the joints are suppressed by the joint stabilising sealer which binds the kiln-dried sand. Oil and food staining sits on the surface of the sealer rather than absorbing into the paving — it wipes or rinses away instead of becoming a permanent stain.
The surface also becomes considerably easier to maintain. A regular jet wash or garden hose removes surface debris without any significant regrowth beneath it. Sealed surfaces typically need a professional clean every three to five years rather than every one to two.
Sealer Types — Which Is Right for Your Surface?
Penetrating Sealer (Natural Finish)
Soaks into the surface and protects from within without changing the appearance. The paving looks the same as when dry. Ideal for natural stone and customers who want invisible protection.
Surface Sealer (Enhancing Finish)
Coats the surface with a thin film that deepens the colour and adds a slight sheen. Block paving looks richer and more saturated. The most popular choice for resin-bonded block paving.
Joint Stabilising Sealer
Penetrates the joint sand between blocks and binds it, preventing weed establishment and reducing the risk of ants undermining the joints from below. Recommended for any block paving with kiln-dried sand joints.
Surfaces We Seal
Block Paving Driveways
The most common request. Concrete and clay block paving absorbs oil readily and grows algae quickly between cleans. Joint stabilising sealer combined with a surface enhancer gives a durable, easy-clean finish that maintains the block's appearance for years.
Natural Stone Patios
Sandstone, limestone, slate and granite all benefit from penetrating sealers that protect the stone from staining and frost damage without altering the natural appearance. Each stone type requires a different product specification — we advise accordingly.
Concrete Slabs
Plain concrete and imprinted concrete are both sealable. Concrete is highly porous and absorbs oil and organics quickly. A quality penetrating sealer significantly reduces this porosity and makes the surface easier to clean.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain has very low porosity and does not strictly require sealing in the same way as natural stone. However, the grout joints between porcelain slabs benefit from a joint sealer to prevent weed establishment and water ingress.

What You Can Expect
From your first call to the finished job, here is how our patio sealing service works.
Tell us the surface type (block paving, concrete slabs, natural stone, resin-bound), approximate area and whether you need pressure washing first or whether the surface is already clean and dry.
We recommend the appropriate sealer type for your surface and confirm the combined clean-and-seal price where relevant.
If cleaning is required first, we pressure wash and allow the surface to dry completely before applying sealer — ideally on a second visit or the following day.
Sealer is applied evenly across the surface using a sprayer and worked in with a squeegee or roller as appropriate. Joints are filled with kiln-dried sand and stabilised where required.
The sealed surface is ready for foot traffic within a few hours and vehicle traffic within 24 hours depending on conditions and sealer type.

Surface must be completely dry before sealing
Sealer applied to a damp surface traps moisture, turns white and has to be stripped and reapplied. We allow at least 24–48 hours drying time after pressure washing before sealing in good conditions.
Top up joints before sealing
If your block paving joints are depleted, top them up with kiln-dried sand before the joint stabiliser is applied — the sealer locks the sand in place, so the joints need to be full to begin with.
Re-seal every 3–5 years
A good quality sealer on a clean surface lasts three to five years under normal use. Driveways with heavy vehicle traffic or in very exposed positions may need re-sealing more frequently.
