Patio repointing — Chafford Hundred, Essex — weeds cleared from joints, slabs relevelled and repointed
Patio before and after — weeds removed, loose slabs relevelled and all joints repointed

The Brief

The homeowner wanted the patio restored. Several slabs had become loose or slightly sunken, weeds had established throughout the joints and the overall surface had deteriorated over several years of weathering.

Initial Condition

The patio joints were heavily infiltrated with weeds and moss. Several slabs had rocked or sunk slightly due to mortar failure beneath them. The jointing material had eroded in sections, allowing water and vegetation to become established between the slabs.

Issues Identified

  • Weeds and moss established throughout all patio joints
  • Several slabs loose or slightly sunken where mortar beneath had failed
  • Jointing compound eroded and missing in sections, allowing water ingress
  • Uneven surface in places creating a potential trip hazard

Our Approach

We cleared all weed growth from the joints, lifted any loose or sunken slabs, relevelled them on fresh mortar and repointed all joints throughout — restoring the patio to a safe, clean and watertight condition.

Work Completed

All joints were cleared of weed growth and old pointing material. Loose and sunken slabs were lifted, the mortar bed was renewed beneath them and they were relaid level with the surrounding surface. All joints throughout the patio were then repointed and finished to a clean, consistent profile.

How We Did It

  1. 1Full assessment of the patio: identification of loose slabs, eroded joints and level variations
  2. 2Weed and vegetation clearance from all joints using mechanical and manual tools
  3. 3Removal of old and failed jointing material throughout
  4. 4Lifting of all loose or sunken slabs
  5. 5Renewal of mortar bed beneath lifted slabs and relevelling
  6. 6Relaying of slabs to the correct level and alignment
  7. 7Pointing of all joints throughout the patio to a consistent profile
  8. 8Finishing and clean-down of the slab faces

Materials Used

Bedding mortar; jointing compound (kiln-dried sand and cement).

Outcome

The patio was level, stable and fully repointed throughout. Weed growth was eliminated from all joints, the surface was safe and the slabs were firm underfoot. The homeowner noted that loose slabs had been a concern for some time and was pleased with the finished result.
