Garden transformation — Upminster, Essex — neglected garden cleared, levelled, turfed and fitted with a new stone pathway
Rear garden before and after — cleared, levelled, stone pathway installed and fully returfed

The Brief

The homeowner wanted their neglected rear garden completely transformed — clearing the existing overgrown and patchy lawn, improving the ground levels and laying new turf throughout with a defined stone pathway through the centre.

Initial Condition

The rear garden was in poor condition. The existing grass had died back in large patches, leaving bare earth and weeds. The ground was uneven in areas and the garden had been largely unused for several years, resulting in substantial weed growth throughout.

Issues Identified

  • Existing grass patchy and largely dead, with significant weed growth throughout
  • Uneven ground surface requiring levelling before new turf could be laid
  • No defined pathway or structure through the garden
  • Several years of neglect had resulted in significant preparatory work being needed before turfing

Our Approach

We stripped the existing vegetation, improved the ground levels, laid a defined stone pathway and then turfed all remaining areas — delivering a clean, structured garden that the homeowner could maintain going forward.

Work Completed

All existing vegetation was stripped and removed from site. The ground was levelled and lightly cultivated. The pathway was marked out and stone edging and slabs were laid. New turf was cut to fit the remaining areas and laid throughout, butt-jointed and firmed down before an initial water was applied.

How We Did It

  1. 1Assessment of the garden dimensions and agreement on the layout
  2. 2Stripping and removal of all existing dead grass and weed growth
  3. 3Ground levelling and light cultivation of the soil surface
  4. 4Marking out of the pathway route and excavation where required
  5. 5Laying of pathway slabs and stone edging to the agreed design
  6. 6Preparation of the soil bed for new turf throughout
  7. 7Laying and trimming of new turf, butt-jointed and firmed throughout
  8. 8Rolling and firming of turf followed by an initial water

Materials Used

New lawn turf; pathway paving slabs; stone edging.

Outcome

The garden was transformed from an overgrown, patchy space into a clean, well-structured rear garden with a healthy new lawn and a clearly defined pathway. The homeowner described the result as completely unrecognisable and was delighted with the transformation.
