• Clean top to bottom — high shelves and light fittings first, floors last.
• Work room by room rather than task by task, so you can see clear progress.
• Leave the kitchen and bathroom for a solid block of time; they take the longest.
• Save vacuuming and mopping until everything above floor level is done.
• Do the room by the front door last so you can leave without walking back through.

Products and Kit Worth Having

You do not need a cupboard full of products, but a few key items make the job far easier:

• A limescale remover for taps, showers, tiles and kettles.
• A degreaser for kitchen surfaces, hobs and extractor hoods.
• A cream cleaner for sinks, baths and stubborn marks.

• Skirting boards, radiators, tops of doors and light switches.
• Window sills, tracks and the tops of internal doors.
• Limescale around taps, showerheads and toilet rims.
• Mould in bathroom sealant and grout.

Timing Around Removals

Cleaning and moving compete for the same short window, so plan the two together:

• If possible, keep access to the property for a day after the removal van leaves.
• Pack a “final clean” box of products and cloths and load it last.
• Do a fridge and freezer defrost a day or two before the move, not on the day.
• Book any professional clean for after the property is completely empty.
• Take dated photos of each finished room for your own records.

Plan Around the Rest of Your Move

Cleaning is only one job among many on moving day, so it pays to think about how it fits with everything else. Keep a small kit of essentials aside — cloths, a couple of key products, bin bags and kitchen roll — and do not pack it into a box you cannot find later. If you are hiring a removal firm, ask whether they can leave the last van space for your cleaning kit so it comes out first at the other end, or stays behind for the final pass. Coordinate meter readings, key handover and your final clean so they do not clash, and give yourself a buffer: rushing the last hour is how skirting boards and window tracks get missed.

Protect Yourself with a Record

However you clean, finish by photographing each room in good light once it is done and empty. If your inventory or check-in report is to hand, quickly compare each room against it so you can spot anything you have overlooked before you leave. Cleaning is one of the most common causes of deposit disputes, so a simple set of dated photos is worth the few minutes it takes — it gives you evidence of the condition you left the property in if any question comes up later.
